Sustainable Developmental Goals (SDG)
The Malaysian Parliament formed an All-Party Parliament Group (APPGM) on SDGs on 17th October 2020 and started a pilot project involving 10 locations (constituencies), two of them being Pensiangan and Papar in Sabah. SAWO participated in the initial discussions in both areas and put in an application for a project in Pensiangan focusing on SDG Three (Health and Wellbeing) and Five (Gender Equality).

About 150 participants, including political and church leaders, village leaders, teachers, and youths, took part in the workshops and contributed to the discussions. There were questions raised regarding the health and child marriage issue such as the health effects on mothers who were married at a younger age, the insufficient number of community health clinics in Pensiangan District, and the lack of a major hospital with specialists.

This project aimed to strengthen community awareness about violence against women and children, and on health-related issues and impact on them. In collaboration with key community leaders who attended a capacity building workshop on the 15th August 2020 in Nabawan, the project team successfully conducted five village-level workshops in Pensiangan from 14th to 19th December 2020. These villages are Kg. Salung, Kg. Babalitan, Kg. Sibua Sasandukon, Kg. Salaron Taka, and Kg. Balaron.
The participants were also interested in the SDGs which they just found out about and the fact that they have a role to play in the country’s efforts towards the achievement of these goals. Many of them wanted to have follow-up workshops to learn more about the SDGs, particularly on governance and economic issues.
